[REVIEW] TonyMoly Backstage Gel Eyeliner in Black

ImageAfter waiting 2 weeks, my anticipated TonyMoly Gel Eyeliner finally came from Korea… with samples too! After thorough researching and rave reviews, I decided to get my first Korean gel eyeliner and I’m happy to say that it is worth the wait and the price. This is great basic eyeliner! Image

I ordered this eyeliner from Cosmetic-Loves‘s store on eBay. Right now they have a promotion right now with free shipping worldwide and a $2 coupon code “cosmeticlove”! Awesome!! Image It came with a skinfood sample and 2 caviar eye wrinkle samples. You bet that I’ll be shopping from their store more often.

TonyMoly Backstage Gel Eyeliner in Black
Brand: TonyMoly (Korean)
Price: $10~$14
Description: “Super-smooth gel eyeliner gives you a fine or blended line: apply thickly and let set, or smudge quickly for a smoky, shadowy look. Dries to a waterproof finish!”

Luckily, cosmetic-love listed mine as an auction on eBay so I was able to snag it for only $6. There are lots of sales on Korean products online too! Now let’s get started with the review!

Packaging: The packaging for this product was really neat and space efficient. Image They had a tiny expandable brush that fit nicely into the cap of the gel. It’s designed such that the gel will take a long, long time to become dry. It’s kind of in an odd shape though because of the brush so it might be a pain to lug it around, but the brush that’s included is also of really decent quality (it isn’t foam!) and is packed in very elegantly. I am a fan of this adorable packaging.

Product: A gorgeous, deep, matte black! The color is very thick and richly pigmented and goes on a very nice deep black. Also, this thing won’t budge. I’ll let you know that I’ve tried many different eyeliners already (MUFE Aqua Liquid Liner, Urban Decay 24/7, drugstore) and at least some of them would panda-eye me or flake off due to my slightly oily and slightly hooded lids. This is one of the few ones that don’t budge after it’s dried. Image It stays in the general same shape and only smudges slightly. I love it! But make sure you set it with eyeshadow or powder to make sure it won’t slip and slide as much.

It’s rather difficult to remove, even with my Maybelline makeup remover. It’s waterproof so water won’t make it budge either. You will have to rub makeup remover or wash your face to get it off, but this staying power is phenomenal and the pigmentation is great!

Application: The product glides on very easily, very smooth and thick, and usually only needs one coat for a rich black line to show up. The brush tip is very soft and it is somewhat flat so it’s not that difficult to get a thin line with it. Plus, you can extend the brush if you like your brushes longer. The brush only tugs a very tiny bit if you pull, but generally it is a very easy application of the product onto your eyes with the brush. I like it!

PROS: Image

  • Pigmented, rich black matte color
  • Includes an eye liner brush
  • Space efficient packaging
  • Affordable price
  • Doesn’t smudge a lot or flake, dries easily
  • Decent application with included brush

CONS: Image

  • Difficult to remove because it simply won’t budge
  • Not travel friendly due to awkward shape
  • Long shipping time if you buy from Korea (I guess that could be a con?… not really)

Get this eyeliner! It can be pretty affordable and I think even Urban Outfitters sells this in store too at $14. Although I’m new at gel eyeliner I had a great experience with this TonyMoly eyeliner. I’ll be trying out other Korean makeup too. The pigmentation is awesome, the packaging is great, and the staying power is awesome. I can’t wait to buy this in other colors as well. Overall, I am very happy with this product and it’s probably one of the best purchases I’ve made in a while. Image

Forgive my face. I’m wearing: Missha Perfect Cover #21, Pixi Bronzer in Subtly Suntouched, Wet n’ Wild Color Icon Blush in Pearlescent Pink and TonyMoly Gel Eyeliner in Black

Influenster 2014 Uni VoxBox Sneak Peeks!

Hey everyone! As you may or may not know, the Influenster VoxBox is a free (yep, you heard that right!) samples box that is given to a bunch of Influenster users every month. I recently qualified for my first free beauty box, the Uni VoxBox, and I’ll be updating this post to keep track of the new sneak peeks they’re giving out of it on their FaceBook. So excited!

A little about Influenster: yes, it’s completely free, and it’s completely legitimate! They send you a box full of free samples, which can be anything from beauty products to a bag full of Hersheys, if they’ve decided you’re a good match,  but who gets the survey and included into the selection seems to be semi-random. After all, it’s free, so there’s probably not enough to go around. However, the higher your “Influence” score is, the more likely you’ll receive a box. You can increase your score by being active on social media and unlocking Expert Badges! It’s super fun!

Anyway, onto the sneak peaks for the 2013 Uni VoxBox! This is a beauty box specifically for university students, which is why I think I qualified!  Image

Sneak Peak #1: The Pilot Acroball Pen

Price: ~$2.23 ($27.67 / dozen)
Description of product: “Pick up a pen that writes as brilliantly as it looks. The stylishly designed Acroball PureWhite uses a vibrant hybrid ink that’s a combination of the best of a ball point and the best of a gel.”

As a college student, you can never have enough pens. And those you do have are usually free and painful to write with. Not to mention I lose pens often. I’ll be happy to get a nice pen with great ink. Image

Sneak Peak #2: NYC Expert Last Lipstick

“NYC Expert Last Lipstick is the next product in the #UniVoxBox – Who’s ready to go fashionably fuchsia this spring?”

Price: €1.99 ~ €2.49 ( $2.73 ~ $3.45USD)
“The New NYC Expert Last Lipstick is moisturising, comfortable and longwearing, it stays on up to 6 hours. Discover the wide range of shades developed to match your every mood and style!”

Who wouldn’t get excited about free makeup, especially lipsticks from a decent drugstore brand like NYC? Not sure if they’re only offering it in the fuschia color though. Image Bright pink lipsticks are kind of intimidating, so I hope they’re offering more than just one shade!

Sneak Peak #3: Red Rose Real Tea Black Tea Premium Water Enhancer

“Just in time for iced tea season! Red Rose Tea water enhancers transform an ordinary drink into an extraordinary thirst quencher. Influenster Nation tests it in the #UniVoxBox.”

Price:  $4.99
Description: Red Rose Real Teas combine high-quality tea with traditional, all-natural flavors. They are also lightly sweetened, containing only five calories per serving, which is one squeeze of the concentrated tea per an 8-ounce glass. In addition, mixing is not required.”

Sneak Peak $4: Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation

Price: $4.99
Description: “A feather light, oil free formula with an airy mousse texture that won’t feel heavy or greasy. Delivers all day shine control and blends flawlessly for a natural looking matte finish.”

Officially confirmed to the this foundation after much speculation! I’m excited to try out new foundations, especially a mousse one. We originally speculated that this was the one included due to the color choices, and it turns out we were right.

Sneak Peak #5: Broadway Nails imPRESS Press-on Manicure

Price: $5.99
Description: “Gel shine in no time. Fast and fabulous. No damage. No glue, no dry time, no drama. Lasts up to a week!”

I honestly have no idea how this is supposed to work. Are they nail stickers? Then why are they in a nail bottle packaging form? Is it a bottle? Do I have to use the nail polish brush for anything?? The packaging is a bit confusing, but I’m excited to try it out.

Sneak Peak #6: Playtex® Sport® Fresh Balance™

Price: $11.99
Description: Your active life demands Sport Level Protection and Comfort from Playtex Sport. Every period, every day. 3 Levels to Protection and Comfort.”

As a girl, well, pads and tampons are expensive. I’m pretty happy that they’re including tampons in this box! Because, well, I need to use them every month, and… okay, well, this is pretty self explanatory. Yay!

tumblr_me09lfQk7l1qdlkygThe total price tag for this box is an amazing $33.19 worth of products, for absolutely free! I’m so excited to get this Uni VoxBox, like you can’t imagine!! Wahoo!!!

[FASHION] Vintage? And florals? For spring? Groundbreaking! + Free $5 Etsy Gift Card

Okay, so maybe flowers for spring aren’t as groundbreaking as I thought they were, but they’re a classic! Here are a few jewels I’ve found while browsing my most recent obsession, etsy. Most are out of my budget but it’s great fashion inspiration. Most of these clothes are vintage or thrifted, which I absolutely adore. Anyway, here’s my first lookbook as we transition from winter into spring!

Favorite Top for Spring: Vintage, printed, patterned blouses

ImageOne of my favorite finds ever would be finding vintage, quirky, printed blouses made of chiffon or polyester at thrift stores. With spring quickly approaching and the cold melting away, this is the perfect weather to still rock long sleeves while transitioning into spring. Image Not to mention it looks one-of-a-kind and vintage! Match it with a solid bottom and neutral accessories so you don’t overwhelm passerby. Image

Favorite Bottoms: High waisted shorts, skirts

Right now I’m lusting after a pair of velvet high-waisted shorts, which can be found on eBay for around $7~10 from China! I’m considering buying one because skater / circle skirts are super popular right now, but velvet ones give off that vintage feel as well as having a super nice texture. The texture also is great for layering and creating a different look. 2014 will be the year of high waists. Vintage is coming back. Watch out!! Image

Favorite Accessories

Spring is a time to burst into color with your tops and jackets and bottoms. That leaves room for simple, neutral and minimalistic jewelry. I’m such a fan of etsy’s awesome jewelry community, which crafts jewelry naturally with gorgeous artistic results. Image The vintage finds of shoes and purses are excellent, albeit a bit pricey, haha. But it’s so inspirational and I think I’ll order a pair of earrings when I can!

Free Etsy Gift Card You Say?

Yep! Click here to redeem your free $5 gift card from Etsy. It’s my own personal referral link, which is why you’ll be able to get the $5. However, the $5 can only be used in Canadian dollars and NOT USD. The Canadian dollar is slightly weaker than the US Dollar, and 1USD = 1.11CAD. You can only use it for purchases over $10 CAD and it expires within a couple of months, but I just thought I would share.

Happy shopping everyone! Image What are you looking forward to for spring?

My free Burberry Brit Rhythm perfume samples arrived today!

I signed up for free samples on the Burberry website for their new perfume, Burberry Brit Rhythm, and today it came in the mail! It’s completely free to sign up for samples.

Here is the link I used to sign up for samples.

It came with a very heavy postcard and 3 little foil samples. These samples aren’t anything I’ve seen before — they are “scent tattoos” and basically you have to get it wet and press the temporary tattoo onto your skin, which will release the scent. It’s a pretty interesting way to get a perfume on, I guess. Anyway, I won’t complain because it was free and they included 3 of these tattoos! Image

Anyway, I did a sample test on my wrist and it came out rather weak… I didn’t expect much power from this little cardboard tattoo thing anyway. There seems to be a very “clean” and slight lavender scent. It reminds me of soap and powder with a little bit of florals mixed in.

I thought I would just share this free samples with you guys. It took about a month for it to arrive in the mail and I had completely forgotten about it, and I don’t think there’s any guarantee you’ll get it, but it’s free and only takes a minute to sign up. So why not? Have a great day everyone! Image

[REVEW] POPBeauty Plump Pout Lip Gloss in Fuschia Freesia

UPDATE: After emailing POPBeauty about the burning plastic smell of the Plump Pout Lip Gloss, they replied and offered to replace it with a full-sized lip gloss. Hooray! It arrived today and smells like cupcakes and vanilla and seems to be a different product almost entirely. I’m still more of a lipstick girl, but thumbs up to POPBeauty for having great customer service.

Hi guys, a quick review on POPBeauty’s Plump Pout Lip Gloss that I received in my Ipsy bag this month! It’s my first neon pink lip gloss and I was pretty scared at first haha.

Brand: POPBeauty
Description:This plumping pout perfector combines the high-shine of a lacquered gloss with the long wear of a stain and is packed full of lip-plumping peptides and avocado & jojoba oils.”
Retail Price: $16.00
Shade: Fuschia Freesia

I was kind of apprehensive about putting this lip gloss on at first. I’m must more comfortable with matte nudes and natural colors, and this bright pink lip gloss seemed pretty terrifying to be honest. Image

I didn’t need to be afraid though. It came onto my lips violently pink, but after a few minutes of rubbing it around it settled in nicely and became a nice pink color! I might wear it a few more times. It’s definitely very creamy and is very pigmented and glides onto your lips smoothly. But it smells like burning plastic, which is a mystery to me.

Would I buy this again? Probably not. But since this came in my ipsy bag I won’t say that I’m disappointed. I might even use it a couple of times. Image Neon pink is just not my favorite color. Well that’s a quick review and swatch for you! Talk to you guys later, I have a midterm tomorrow.

[REVIEW] Mini Daiso haul!

Hi everyone! I just got back from a mini shopping spree with some spare change from Daiso. If you don’t know what Daiso is, it’s basically a Japanese dollar store where everything is $1.50! Image Most of the items are pretty high quality and they sell everything from slippers to makeup to kitchenware.

That being said, I was excited to try out some of the Daiso makeup for $1.50 since I heard Asian dollar store makeup is safer than American ones. I’m not keen on putting cheap stuff onto my sensitive skin, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Items from Left to Right: Daiso Charcoal Cleansing Foam, Daiso Charming Eyebrow Pencil in Dark Brown, Daiso Cosmetic Paper (250 Sheets)

Price tag for each item? $1.50. Image It’s amazing how much you can get at Daiso for so little. But does the quality hold up to the amazing price?

(1) Daiso Charcoal Cleansing Foam Review

Small tiny balls of charcoal absorb dust and pollution. It clears dirt and sebum in pores. Make bubbles with water, softly massage and wash out.”

Charcoal has been getting really popular with skincare and makeup products, touted with its magical benefits that wipe away dirt and oil. I have oily and sensitive skin and I’ve heard good things about this product, even though it’s so cheap, and was excited to try it out. They have a Daiso Charcoal Face Mask and Cleaning Cream as well, but I decided to try this first before buying the other two. Image

The packaging for this product is very simple. It’s mostly in Japanese, although there is an English translation on the back that gives simple instructions on how to use it. You twist off the tube and squeeze a small amount of product into your hand.  The consistency and color of the product is a grayish color, slightly thick and a little runny. It has a very faint, clean soap smell. It lathers easily with some drops of water but it doesn’t turn into a foam with just hands, disappointingly (perhaps it will with a Clarisonic?).

After washing it off my face felt pretty tight. I could feel it did a deep clean. However, after a few more minutes and washing my face with some more water, my skin turned a bit soft. This cleanser is great for people with oily skin like me since it strips away your sebum skin layer (or so it claims). However by doing so you must remember to moisturize so that you don’t overexcite your skin into producing more oil than it needs. This cleanser is recommended for people with combo or oily skin, or otherwise it’d dry out your face too much.

I haven’t broken out yet, though, which is a plus. For $1.50 it seems to be a pretty decent face wash and it can’t be beat for the price! Image

(2) Daiso Charming Eyebrow Pencil in Dark Brown

I bought this eyebrow pencil because — hey why not? It has a little eyebrow brush at the end too, which makes it perfect for travelling. What makes it even better is the fact that Daiso provides a lovely, sturdy little aluminum case that fits the pencil perfectly so that it’s safe and clean while you travel! Definitely a fan of this packaging and I’ll be carrying this around in my purse. Image

As far as pigmentation goes, it’s mediocre and isn’t particularly creamy or anything. The color goes onto my eyebrows easily enough and blends, but it’s very light and rather difficult to see and smudges off easily. The pigmentation could be a lot better. Image I think I’ll need to put it on thicker if I need it to work. But as far as $1.50 goes it’s not an awfully terrible eyebrow pencil, and the packaging really makes this worth it!

(3) Daiso Cosmetic Paper Oil Blotting Sheets (250)

“Desktop oil blotting paper which is designed as traditional “washi” paper box. It’s especially suited for office and makeup table. gentle to skin, and it is arranged in an “open-heart / cross” design for easy dispensing.”

I had been looking for oil blotting sheets and was pleasantly surprised to find them at Daiso! Oil blotting sheets aren’t meant to be rubbed on the face, but rather, patted so it can remove shine but not essential oils necessary for your face to remain healthy. If you rub it it will also smudge your makeup and wipe oil everywhere!

These Daiso dispensing boxes are made of cardboard and have a cute little dispensing fold thing so that you always have an easy way to get another sheet. The sheets themselves number from 100 – 300 in Daiso. It’s made of a simple little yellow sheet that turns transparent once it has absorbed your oil, and it does its job. Since I have oily skin I find it takes 2 papers for my face to be completely shine free. These are a cheap alternative to other oil blotters and it comes in an adorable box that you can set on your table! Image

For $1.50, I really can’t complain about the quality of these products, but they’ve surpassed my low expectations and perform surprisingly well. My sensitive oily skin is saying thank you! I can’t wait to pick up some more Daiso makeup goodies when I’m back. They aren’t anything like high-end makeup, but are convenient for travelling and for basics. For the price and the quality it simply can’t be beat. I love Daiso. Image

[REVIEW] Ipsy February 2014 Beauty Box — My first one!

I am SOOOO excited to say that my first beauty box has arrived! Image I decided to suscribe to Ipsy in the middle of January 2014 and now my first personalized beauty box is here for $10. Let’s see how it goes!

Beauty boxes are basically subscription services that send you a beauty box every month, much like a magazine (except instead of a magazine you get a bunch of beauty stuff)! You can’t pick the things you get though, but it’s great for trying out new things because it’s relatively affordable and they are all sample sized, although sometimes you even get full sized sample boxes!! Plus, they even make you take a quiz so they can better suit your needs and send you things you are more likely to use. I picked Ipsy because they send makeup, while other beauty boxes can also send skin care and hair care and even purely nail polish. Ipsy is $10 a month and is a great starter box for newbies like me.

If you’re interested in signing up for Ipsy, click here! 😀

So, when my first Ipsy bag arrived today I was ecstatic! This is what I got:

Not bad for $10, right? Let’s see a little more about each individual product…

(1) Pacifica Hawaiin Ruby Guava Body Lotion (Full Size Retail $15) —  I’ve heard lots of things about Pacifica so I wasn’t surprised when I opened this up and smelled absolute heaven. The scent is amazing and reminds me of a tropical island. Also, when I put it on my hands they immediately became as soft as baby butts. I don’t use body lotion often though  but maybe I’ll make an exception this one time because it just smells sooooo good.  Image

(2) Zoya in Odette (Retail $9) — Yes, a FULL SIZED Zoya in a gorgeous lavender color! It’s from their new Naturel line too. Normally they retail around $9 so this already makes up for most of the beauty box haha. I normally don’t wear nail polish either but this looks beautiful!

Image(3) EyeTini Cream Shadow + Base in Spiced Rum (Retail $18) — My first cream shadow! I was originally worried I wasn’t going to like it but it blends beautifully on my skin and is an amazing bronze color. It blends so easily and is super creamy with a slight shimmer in it too. I can’t believe it retails for $18 though!

Here are some swatches on how beautifully it blends. Image

Image(4) Pop Beauty Plump Pout Lip Gloss Mini in Fuschia Freesia (Full Size Retail $16) — This is the only thing out of the whole batch I don’t know if I’m going to use. I’m not a fan of neon pinks and much prefer naturals and neutrals, but meh, maybe I’ll give it a go since I’ve heard some pretty good things about this lip gloss!

(5) J.Cat Eyelashes + Eyelash Glue in 747L (Retail $3) — Hooray! My first falsies as well. I’ve been looking to find some eyelashes and eyelash glue, honestly, so I was pleased that this included both. These eyelashes are a bit dramatic for me though, so hopefully I’ll be able to use the glue multiple times to glue other eyelashes onto me.

All in all I’m pretty happy with my first Ipsy bag. I’m disappointed I didn’t get the Be Matte blush that was available, but I’m excited to see what other things they have in the future. I’ll probably be doing more in depth product reviews for each one of these sometime in the future so stay tuned and thanks for reading! Image
